WRATH OF THE RENEGADES
PIRATE ADVENTURE NOVEL SAMPLE
Brett stated the obvious, "They’re going to hang your captain…right now."
The Bristol sailor’s face turned a sickening pale grey as he said, "I’ll make sure to tell the authorities in England he died a naval hero." He then turned to leave but abruptly stopped as Brett grabbed the rifle in his hand. "What kind of a man watches his own captain die?" Ripping the musket back out of Brett’s grasp the sailor replied icily "We’re not going to watch, we’re going to save ourselves." Johnny stepped forward till he was only inches from the Bristol man’s black eyes. "As your Prince I order you to stay and aid in the rescue of one of our Captains. It is your duty as a British Officer." The man just smiled condescendingly as if he knew something no one else did. Without blinking he handed the musket to Johnny and directed the other two sailors to do the same, then maintaining the unsettling smile said, "You can have our weapons…prince. But the moment we stepped off our ship our duties ended…He’s your captain not ours." And with that all three deserters disappeared into the jungle.
Suddenly another loud roar of cheering erupted from the inlet below. The pirates had finished building the scaffold and were dragging the blindfolded Captain McWilliam toward the steps, who resisted his soon to be executioners with every ounce of strength he had. Johnny and the others looked down at the scene below, then at the two cutlasses, four pistols, and three muskets they held, then back at the forty-five pirates below. There was no question for Johnny and Brett. British to the core, they could not walk away. But they wondered, would Sammy and Russ fight despite the near suicidal odds against them?
As if reading their minds Sammy simply nodded his head. "I will fight. No coward for me." They all then turned to Russ who was studying the scaffold and the waterfall and stream behind it, his expression for the first time deadly serious. "Can we rely on you to help us?" Johnny asked. Russ turned and replied confidently, "Help you? I can do better than that lads!" He then pulled the two cutlasses out of the crisscrossed sheaths on his back, the wild smile quickly returning, and pointing towards the scaffold with both swords he said, "Here’s how we save the Captain."
Two minutes later Captain McWilliam was finally dragged up the scaffold steps. Despite the blindfold he knew exactly what the pirates intended. Even after the rope was placed around his neck he continued to fight as hard as possible, actually kicking three pirates off the scaffold onto the sand below and tearing his blindfold off in the struggle. Not bothering to replace the blindfold two more pirates quickly brought the Captain to his knees with savage punches to his ribcage. The rope was tightened and he was pushed to the centre of the platform to stand above the crudely constructed trapdoor. Finally sensing that he had just lost his final chance at escape he glared at the jeering pirates who were surrounding the scaffold to the left, right, and front.
Defiant to the end he stared out at the thieves who were eagerly anticipating his death. These particular pirates were a coarse and depraved group of men he thought, and their appearance before him only enforced his disgust for them. Every one of them looked more violent and corrupt than the next, especially the pirate making his way towards the front of the scaffold. He was clearly the sickest looking of all of them. The Captain closed his eyes. The last thing he wanted before dying was to see a pirate with a strange tattoo on the side of his face.
The scaffold cleared except for two pirates, one who stood beside the Captain on the left, the other who stood to the right beside the lever which would open the trapdoor. This pirate waved goodbye to the Captain who kept his eyes now closed. The psychotic pirate then turned to the lever and feigned grabbing the wooden handle in an attempt to prolong the moment, until he finally yelled savagely in delight and swung his hand downward. But before he could release the trapdoor a loud hiss filled the air and the pirate screamed once more, but this time out of agony as his hand was pinned to a wooden timber, a sword embedded directly in the middle of his hand. Captain McWilliam opened his eyes in surprise while the pirate mob roared in anger as Russ jumped atop the scaffold, ripping the sword out of the pirate’s blood drenched hand, and in one swift movement punched the wounded man down the steps.
Russ quickly unsheathed the other cutlass from behind his back and in two quick moves had the other pirate tumbling over the side as well. Using both swords like a pair of scissors he then sliced the rope above the Captain in one swift cut, then after slicing the rope tying McWilliam’s bound wrists he tossed one of the cutlasses to McWilliam who couldn’t believe that the wildest looking man he had ever seen was helping him escape. They immediately fought back to back as the pirates climbed up and slashed at them furiously. But it only took a couple seconds for everyone to realize that the Captain and Russ were elite swordsmen. Each pirate was easily punched, kicked, or slashed off the scaffold.
Suddenly the crowd quieted as a seven foot tall monster of a pirate slowly walked up the steps brandishing a two handed battle axe. Taking aim he swung the axe brutally in every direction, nearly slicing Russ in two. But finally Russ saw his chance and with a quick slash of the cutlass the monster of a man screamed in pain and rolled off the side clutching his hand, leaving the axe and four of his fingers behind.
Shocked that their bravest man had been so easily beaten the pirates then rushed the scaffold with a wild vengeance. The first three pirates tackled the Captain who desperately fought back, and in the fighting the cutlass was ripped out of his hand, sliding across the wooden planks of the scaffold and falling to the sand below. In desperation Russ sheathed his cutlass and jumped onto the back of one of the men, using the man’s height to grab onto the crossbeam above. He then used his momentum to swing in the direction of the waterfall, then back towards the three men, kicking two of them off the scaffold and dropping onto the third who was punching McWilliam. Now free the Captain jumped to his feet and together he and Russ easily tossed the pirate over the side headfirst down onto the beach...
